25. The Suicide Machines - Part 1 (w/ Dissidente)

We can't wait to tell you about our new ep! Checkered Past welcomes Chris Ruckus of Pittsburg Skacore band Dissidente on the podcast to discuss influential Ska Punkers The Suicide Machines! First, Chris recounts his formative Ska years, the realities of going to shows as you age and the unfortunate realities of pay-to-play booking. Then, Rob, Engineer Joey and Chris go through the 90's era of The Suicide Machines from their snotty early years to their Hollywood Records deal to their Beatles-influenced self titled album. They cap it off with a game of Blank and the Blanks and Chris settles the debate of what exactly makes a dumpling.

Dissidente

WHO is Dissidente you ask? Dissidente represents the next generation of American Ska-Core. Finding themselves somewhere between the politically charged skate-punk riffs of Propaghandi and the grimey crust-ska of Leftover Crack, Dissidente throws everything you think you know about ska-punk into the fire... only to pull it out again completely remade

Dissidente is a leftist political hardcore ska band comprised of two Russian immigrants and a life-long Pittsburgher. Our homes in Northside, Mt. Oliver and Swissvale frequently host touring bands in need of a place to stay and do laundry.

When you think of heavier ska bands, groups like Leftover Crack, early efforts from The Suicide Machines, and Against All Authority are sure to come to mind. Dissidente follow in those footsteps but with a healthy appetite for metal influences, songs in Russian, and a socio-political consciousness. The War on Two Fronts is easily the heaviest release of the Bad Time Records discography surpassing the likes of Grey Matter and The Best of The Worst.
